Sonamarg: Where the Mountains Begin to Sing

If Kashmir is a poem, Sonamarg is its opening line — dramatic, stunning, and impossible to forget. The name literally means “Meadow of Gold,” and it lives up to every syllable. As you approach, the landscape begins to shift — valleys widen, peaks sharpen, and the air turns cooler, fresher, more alive.

Snow-capped mountains tower over lush green fields, while the Sindh River snakes through like liquid silver. I stood there, breath caught, as clouds drifted lazily across the peaks. Everything felt big — not in a loud way, but in that quiet, humbling way nature sometimes has of making you feel small and grateful.

A short pony ride took me to Thajiwas Glacier, where kids played in the snow, and the wind carried the scent of pine and ice. The silence up there was different — not empty, but deep. You could hear it in the crunch of snow underfoot, in the flap of prayer flags in the breeze.

Sonamarg isn’t just a destination — it’s a feeling. One of awe, of wonder, of standing at the edge of something vast and beautiful. It doesn’t ask for words — it just leaves you with a full heart and a quiet smile.
